Just Nuisance - the hard way

We hiked from Jubilee Square in Simon's Town to the grave of Just Nuisance, famous great dane who saw the sailors safely home during the war by accompanying them on the train to Cape Town. The grave is situated on top of Red Hill directly above Simon's Town, with magnificent panoramic views across False Bay, but we didn't take the direct route via the road to the top. No, we did the Historic Mile then turned up at the backpackers and zigzagged steeply up to the start of the stone steps - 350 or so that went pretty much straight to the top of the mountain. The treads and risers were equal, about the size of a boot, and so much leg-lifting took place going up and side-stepping coming down. It was exhausting. Even worse - when we came back to the road after a really worthwhile climb, a group of youngsters was waiting to go up and one girl said, Yoh Yoh Yoh, I want to be old like you right now! She was obviously awestruck that someone of our age(s) could have even attempted the steps, let alone made the descent without the help of an air ambulance. It would have been interesting to see what she looked like when she came down again, but she was wearing a T-shirt that said Comrades 2017, so probably wasn't even breaking a sweat.
We then took a sharp left and headed for the waterfall, another walk all of its own. I have to admit that many of us, including me, didn't make the final scramble up the rocky path, and relaxed under a shady tree enjoying the spectacular views. Perhaps another time.
